I am not sure when it was abandoned, but since it will not work with a 10" blade(it WILL cut the table) I assume when Shopsmith resumed production with a 10" blade, it was deleted.

The 510 fence should be able to bridge the gap between the tables, so the 'work around' slot is no longer needed. This is another indication to me that the Mark 5 was not intended to be used with the fence bridging the gap between the tables.

My 1976 year machine that I purchased new from shopsmith has the two slot table. The 1979 machine, a used machine did not have it but I don't know the history so I can not say for sure if that is the original table for the machine, likely it is but....

It was my understanding that the table mold needed to be replaced and at that time the extra slot was removed. One could still put another slot in the new table as the casting would accommodate it but I don't see that as being all that necessary. (There is another way to fix this issue by having the main table above the extension table and the rip fence attached to the extension table but that is another story).

I have had no problem with the 1976 model and bridging the gap it works just fine with both small and large extension tables. I cannot say about non shopsmith produced machines but one can certainly check them out to see if you have or don't have the ability to align them. I'm optimistic after my testing this afternoon (see posting above from earlier today for details).

Now what did surprise me when I got a 510 was the bridge problem, I never did get the alignment right or even close to being right for that. It was also one of the reason I upgraded to a 520 on that machine. Over the years I have read a lot of others having the same problem on the 510, certainly enough to make me wonder about the issue. I also know that a lot of people have no problem so is it hardware or user related I don't know. I will say given the choice of fence systems the 520 is heads above the others (no offense intended to those happy with their 510's).
