One came with a 2 bearing quill upgrade. My 1963 vintage did not need replacement! No I do not believe keeping one on hand is necessary.

I see. I think I put way too much strain on it, trying to knock down a Douglas fir 4x4. I should have chamfered it on the tablesaw first. Redwood/cedar isn't so tough.

If I hear bad news from shipping, I'll take you up on your offer!

IIRC, the inside of the greenie drive shaft is splined to receive the splined spindle. When it warms up this weekend I'll check to make sure. I thought all ShopSmiths had splined drive shafts. Shows what I know!

I don't know for sure but this thread may shed some light on the problem.

Just some additional thoughts.
JPG my coupler is almost 30 years old and no problems although I do have two spares. Both came with two bearing quill upgrades so if he needs one I can spare one.
If the quill shaft is bent AND the positioning washer is missing would a bad front bearing combine to cause enough "whip" and strain to cause a failure??
Wouldn't think so but this is a rare failure.

Yes. I definitely tested the spindle and spun it in the quill housing to feel the bearings. There's a knocking at each full rotation and the spindle had a slight slap/sloppiness, too. I ordered a new spindle and the coupler---so I'll probably have an extra coupler when I'm finished.
