I am at a loss to explain what you found inside or to be more precise what you didn't find. Maybe someone who has that era of Jig Saw made by Magna American corporation in the mid 1960's can comment on it. In all the parts diagrams and parts lists it has been listed as an assembly so it is possible that internal changes may have been made to it.

I have only owned three Jig Saws that include the model numbers 610/505644, one of which was a 1957 model 610 Greenie (shown below) I restored a few years ago and resold. After working on the leather seal and replacing the air tube, the pump worked well so I didn't open up the Upper Bracket Assembly. If it ain't broke don't fix it. My other two Jig Saws model 505644 are a 1980 which I use and a 1984 which is still "new in the box" that is stored for future use. The 1980 is working fine so no need to open it up yet and the 1984 is, well "new" and never used. These are not including the Model 10E/10ER specific Jig Saws Model A-34 which have a different air puffer system.

Thanks - here a better look. I've got a huge pile of reclaimed slow growth pine taking up room in the garage that I salvaged when we tore down our original 95 year old detached garage to build a new one (this one includes my shop!) so I look for any excuse to use it. It's full of nail holes and looks awful before I send it through my planer, but the close-spaced growth rings are amazing and it cuts like a hardwood. I spent a week pulling nails out of it and still run a metal detection wand over it before I put blades into it in case I missed some.

Yep - I’ve run out of wall space. Almost everything in my shop has wheels on it so I can roll it out of the way when I’m not using it - SS, workbench, planer, router table, jigsaw, dust deputy, compressor, grinder, tool cabinet, and storage trunk. I wall mounted the jointer and bandsaw while there was still room.
