Make sure you align the tail stock center to the drive center. You may have caused the round eccentric to move while 'banging on the floor'.

Hi Tad! Although "they" say not to use a metal hammer to free the tail center, I have found a couple light taps with an 8 oz ball pein hammer frees the center every time. A word of caution - If you do this type of removal, have a well padded hand to catch the center when it comes out. Man!!!! that point is sharp and you don't want it falling point first onto a hard floor.
If you have the live center mounted in the tailstock, ( "C" in your picture) you can unscrew the bearing and point before removing.
