I f you want a wood vise build one.
You need a thread rod 1 inch in dia., a pipe tee to fit on one end that you can put wood dowel through for a handle. A flange to mount either on the moveable head or on the fixed head. A few washers and cotter pins. and to pieces of black pipe to use as guide slides.
Doesn't have quick release but it is dirty cheap and works everytime.
Take two pieces of wood you are going to use for vice jaws and drill three hole. Two are 3/4 and are about an inch in from the edge of the jaw and about 1/2 up from the bottom of the jaw. The other hole 1 inch is drilled so the pipe flange with fulls set touching the bottom of the jaw and center from both ends of the jaw.
One the holes are drilled on your band saw or by hand cut a slot from the edge of the jaw to the center of the 3/4 holes. It is so you can run a screw up from the bottom and clamp the jaw on the 3/4 black pipe slider in moveable jaw you do not want to cut slots in the fixed jaw.
Once that is done mount the pipe flange over the hole in the fixed jaw.
Now get your threaded rod hopefully 16 threads per inch so you don't have to turn it too much. and thread it thru the hole in the fixed jaw into the flange and into the moveable jaw. Now screw on the t fitting where the rod comes through the moveable jaw and mark the threaded rod on the both sides of the moveable jaw. On the inside mark dril a hole and place a cotter pin and washer on rod install the moveable jaw put another washer and screw the t back on. Now drill through the t and rod and pin together. Instead a 1 inch dowel through the top of the t for a handle turn some knobs of some kind to hold it in. Now stick the two 3/4 pipes in the holes in the fixed jaw and into the holes on the moveable and about 1/2 from the edge on the bottom of jaw drill a hole down to the cut a little large than you screw shank then in drill the rest of the hole the proper size for the screw you will use. This will draw the wood to pinch and hold the pipes in the moveable jaw. You vice is now down. Take it back apart finish it and mount the fixed jaws to you bench making sure you leave room for the pipes and rod to slide under the bench top.
If I have a light colored bench top I use walnut for the jaws, if I have a dark bench top use Maple or southern yellow pine (that very hard stuff) for the jaws. If you want dogs make your moveable jaw thick enough that you can drill holes in it to hold the dogs.
You can even use side dogs to hold wood on edge of the bench to plane their edge.
This vice is cheap and depending on your craftsmenship it can look like home made or something a pro would drool over.
