I took the quill feed apart and found the spring in 2 pieces-definitely broken. So,I'll be looking for a replacement assembly. I have plenty of other stuff to do,though. The machine seems to run great and I have it clean as a whistle. Gotta learn how to switch from tool to tool faster!

Thanks for the link for the miter gauge mod.

Hi Fred, and welcome. One of the 'truths' I have learned about using the ShopSmith is to, as much as possible, plan the work so that you use one configuration, then another and so on. For instance, do all the table-sawing at one go (again, as much as possible), then all the boring, then sanding, then up with the unit and do all the vertical-tool work. Saves not only labour, but once you make the tool change, take some time to make sure the tool is setup correctly and safely each time.

Hi,Derek

I can see what you said is important. I also need to figure out which dedicated machines that I already have will still get used. I actually started off thinking about a SS as a better drill press + adding horizontal boring. I have nice tablesaw, router table, jointer.........I'm guessing it will be a mix.

I also like the idea of rolling the SS outdoors in warm weather.

Today is a nice day, but look out when the sun drops to the west!

Cold but the sun is working nicely.

Beware tomorrow evening!

I'm slow to cull anything. My wife refers to "my stuff" as junk. I think of it as something I might need in the next 20-30 years!

That's a great quill-feed tutorial....excellent photos,too!

Thanks,

Fred
