Peter, thanks for the tip on the bit of lead -- I have some lead shot around or perhaps a split shot sinker. Until your post, I hadn't given any though to mounting metal lathe stuff on the Shopsmith. Much of mine seems way to big and heavy, like the 8" four jaw, for the Shopsmith, although the Jacobs headstock chuck looks ideal.
On the other hand, I picked up a Smithy Supershop last year that came with a heavy 6" 3-jaw and a 10" cast iron face plate that mount on it's 2 1/4" x 8 TPI spindle. It also takes R8 tooling so there are all kinds of options there, and it spins as slow as 32 RPM. It's a very nice machine -- like a Shopsmith on steroids.

A while back I bought a Nova Midi chuck & then found the adapter (I think it's 1" x 8) on Amazon.com for about $16. I just plugged in "Shopsmith lathe chuck" at Amazon & see the adapter for $13.75. There are a couple other sizes there as well.

I believe that the spindle on a Nova lathe is 1-1/4 x 8 RH for the US. The other size they have is M33 x 3.5 RH.
Now it could be I'm remembering this wrong but you might want to check before you start planning on have 1-1/2 x 8 adapters that are really 1-1/4.

It frustrates me no end that manufacturers(and retailers who kow tow to them) seem to think it is reasonable to hide details of their products(like thread sizes) that adapt their 'stuff' to other manufacturers stuff. All those nova adapters with NO indication of what they are adapting from(1 1/4-8 RH?). They seem to act like it is a trade secret!!! Actually it is to prevent one from using somebody else's stuff. Bad Karma!
But then most of what is being posted on line as 'specifications' are mostly nebulous non relevant drivel(like it was written by those other sexually oriented folks for themselves). A lot of words, but little meaningful details. Nothing mechanical!
If the Nova adapters fit a 1 1/2-8 spindle, why pray tell are the chucks 1 1/4-8? That just does not compute! internal/external threads will create a very thin wall or added length!!!
At this point I have to question that 1 1/2-8 is a nova thing and 'D' and 'F' adapters are either an earlier version or somebody else's stuff.

Follow up to my last post.
I went to the site and checked out the DVR 2024 lathe a few days ago(wireless remote posting). While there I had noted some details about the lathe. Since my mind sometimes plays tricks on me on today's visit I copied the following
"
Product Technical Specification:
- Bowl turning capacity: 20"/508mm inboard. 33"/838mm outboard. (Using optional outrigger accessory)
- Between centers: Standard 24"/600mm. Extendable to as long as you want in 20"/508mm increments, using optional bed extension accessory.
- HP: 2.3 HP (220 V)
- Speed range: 100 - 5000 continual variable speed
- Spindle Thread: 1 1/4" 8TPI RH (USA, Canada, Australasia & UK), M33 x 3.5 RH (Europe excluding UK)
- Tailstock: 2MT hollow, Self Ejecting
- Swivel head: 360 degree swivel and lock at any position, plus detent locating positions at 0, 22, 4 and 90 degree. High accuracy and easy swivel."
I also own a G3 with "F" adapter, so I went and pulled that out of the shop, my hand is still cold, the chuck at 39 degrees really pulls the heat out of fingers. Got out the caliper and low and behold it reads just under 1-1/2", clearly not 1-1/4".
So ignore my previous post...

I don't think the makers of the Nova chuck are hiding anything about the thread size of the chuck, nor the adapters. The female threads on the Nova chucks are 1 1/2" x 8 TPI and if you want to fit the chuck to something with a spindle other than that size you have to buy the appropriate adapter. Teknatool has a letter/number designator for each adapter -- "F" for Shopsmith, "D" for 1" x 8 TPI, "L" for 1 1/4" x 8 TPI, etc., etc. I believe all of this is in the Nova Chuck owners manual.
Simply go to the Teknatool web site and you'll find all that information. Even if they didn't provide it, a thread gauge and calipers would provide the answer.
By the way, Oneway uses a different internal thread in their universal chucks and they'll even make you a custom adapter if they don't have one in your size.
