Where were you 50 years ago?

I was in the 8th AF command post buried in a mountain near Springfield Massachusetts conducting a class in Computers 101 for about 8 airmen assigned to the site. Needless to say the class terminated.

Eight grade health class taught by Mr. Nelson. The nation stood still until after the funernal. I heard today that Mrs. Kennedy was age 34 at the time.

I was getting dressed for my shift at Misawa AFB, Misawa Japan. I could barely hear the radio in the room next door but could tell something was wrong from the tone of the voices on the radio. Needless to say, the base went on immediate alert. I was a Morse Intercept Operator and worked in a secure compound. The site was so secure that it was double fenced and even the Air Police were not allowed inside the second fence, so I was assigned guard duty inside the compound fence but not issued a weapon. I asked them what I was supposed to do if something happened... throw my typewriter at them? Obviously the Sargent was not impressed with my little joke.

I was in my Freshman English class at James Whitcomb Riley High School, in South Bend, IN. Our teacher was Mrs. McMillan. It is hard to believe it was 50 years ago.

I wasn't born for another 17 years. I spent 2 years at Parkland when I was in the radiology program doing my clinical internship. They have a JFK memorial set up on the ground floor. The old ER where they worked on him has since been converted to the radiology department where I spent most of my time. It always felt eerie.

I spent several weeks reading films with a radiologist that was there when they brought JFK in. He said almost every doctor in the hospital gathered in the ER room. The thing he remembers most was Jackie. She was right beside JFK the entire time and there was a large piece his brain stuck on the front of her dress. He told me he kept wanting to knock it off but it was large enough she would have noticed, and nobody wanted to mess with her in any way.

I was in French Lab in my junior year at Furman University. Each person was in a little booth with headphones listening and repeating French sentences. The graduate student/teacher was a friend and she had been listening to the radio on her system (not real dedicated ) and was able to plug me into what she was listening to. So while the rest of the class was still repeating sentences in French, she and I were connected to the real world to our horror. The feelings shared by most of us students over the next few days was one of disbelief and shock. The real world had intruded into our campus world.

I was five years old ... two years older than little John-John. I watched it all on TV, and studied the grownups as they worked through their emotions. It is my first memory of national trauma, from a decade that would be full of it.

I got out of school early that day to prepare for a ROTC drill platoon competition the next day. So I was listening to the radio while I spit shined my shoes. The first day we were back at school I was part of the firing squad for the school's memorial service. Here is the kicker for younger people. This was high school not college. We had real working weapons and no one shot up the school and students. How much things have changed.

I was in 6th grade history class at Lincoln Jr High in Plymouth IN when they announced the shooting and science class when they announced his death.
