After all this, my sixteen year old grandson has been visiting for a week, and I just found out he is studying design. One project was a birdhouse using Sketchup. He leaves tomorrow so will not be much help.

Back to square one, or put on a round metal roof.

After my last post I decided rather than scrap the work, I might as well try to fix it. After all, if I didn't succeed, well it was scrap anyway.

I started changing the angles of the four roof pieces that had to come together. It took about eight narrow cuts on the band saw for each piece but I finally got to a point that they fit ok. Here is the result.

It's meant to be for chickadees and is still not perfect but I don't think the birds will notice that four roof panels are not the same size as the others, nor will they notice they don't quite meet on the bottom edge. That gap was filled with epoxy so water can't get in. The copper flashing covers the hole where the roof panels meet.

It's finished with a couple of coats of Tung & Teak oil for protection and to bring out the colour of the cedar.

I would like to try more but I have find a better way to make the roof panels. Maybe I'll have to spring for a better blade for my CMS to make cutting the angles easier, or at least more quickly.

Neat! You can specify the 'degree' of accuracy to up to three places.

The PTWFE table is to a quarter of a degree.

Now how does one set the SS to three places?:D
