HELP! Jointer has started to taper boards

I think one thing to remember is that the OP is jointing quarter sawn flat stock. I think most of us normally joint flat sawn or riff sawn stock. There might be a difference. Everyone is correct on the proper grain direction.

The technique is perfectly correct. Wanting to know why it has happened after all of the years using the same/correct technique is a ligament question.

Having said that, I never measure my jointed stock since I don't care if there is a little taper. I don't know if it happens here since I have never checked and have never had a reason to check. The thickness planer will take care of that.

I am face jointing the boards.

Here are pix showing grain patterns on face and on edge.

Based on Ben's comment I think that I have to learn to better read the edge for grain pattern.

In that last pix, the left end of the board need be the leading end.

However the grain direction may vary over the entire length.

With that point in the grain, I'd try it the other way. The left end being the trailing end. A lot wood depend upon how the rest of the edge looks. Sometimes it's just a crap shoot to try one end, then the other end.

He be face planing. If he were edge jointing, I would agree(right end leads).
