I think I may have read something about this in PTWFE (I think the newest edition, but not sure, as I bought it used on Amazon, and don't have it in front of me). In the beginning of the sawing chapter, it talks about the dust collection differences between the 510 and the 500. It says that the lower guard for the 500 splits in two to accommodate an insert to allow for dado blades/molding head. It said the insert was available from MS or you could make your own, for which it gave a simple drawing.

I'd suggest making or buying the lower guard insert. That would close the gap regardless of blade/quill position.

Yes the quill portion does split in two, BUT you can put a dado with extra spacers in there adding up to 1 1/2" without that insert and installing that would help close the gap at the bottom, but would open up the gaps at the top, but making a table insert and extending the quill was quicker,the complete dust chute IS IN 2 Pieces, one attaches to the Headstock and the other half attaches to the table upright tubes.

I meant to add these pictures showing the gap closed.

What I haven't seen are the shields that get installed front and back. Are they there?

Also tell me more about this screw that contacts at the 3/8" dimension. What is it attached to again? Perhaps a better picture?

Ed, In the post above this one, it shows the 2 guard halves, INSTALLED in this post it shows the 2 halves coming together the screw as I stated in an earlier post is on the Headstock, it holds the lower motor cover to the headstock Main Frame. what are you missing, it is all there if you look.

OK you are talking motor pan screw not some reference screw.... got ya.

Ed, In the post above this one, it shows the 2 guard halves, INSTALLED in this post it shows the 2 halves coming together the screw as I stated in an earlier post is on the Headstock, it holds the lower motor cover to the headstock Main Frame. what are you missing, it is all there if you look.

Ed I have the original Instructions for my "Mark V (Model 500) Saw Guard System Retrofit Kit 505875." (PL_5202 Rev. 2/88)There aren't any Shields on the drawing or referred to in the directions. Maybe they changed it later, but those shields were not part of the original kit I bough 1-30-1991 according to the invoice. By extending the quill, and closing the bottom gap, that has done more to improve dust collection than anything else I have tried.

It looks like part #32 would do the same function. Those I'm guessing you do have in place.

I guess what matters most is if it is working for you. With the blade that far over does the upper guard still function?

Ed, Item 32 is a thin plastic strip that moves up and down in a slot on the headastock mounted portion, but the biggest gap is to the side of them, as far as the splitter, it is adjustable and is near its limit at that position, here is a picture of that.
Actually I used this for years and never thought much of how poorly this dust chute worked, but recently I had to do alot of ripping on the Shopsmith and after using my Saw Stop for my main table saw with its 90% collection, then doing so much ripping on the SS I ended up ankle deep in saw dust and then started questioning why it performed so bad. Believe me I love my Shopsmith, after all I still have it 35 years later, that is why I just bought the Power Pro Do It Yourself Upgrade and just scored a 520 upgrade, never used on eBay for half price, so now a whole new learning experience, plus next week I am going to look at a 1957 Greenie, to update with the parts off my 1981 SS after the Power Pro conversion. And now all my inserts, 6 of them won't fit my new 520 table, etc, so eBay here they come.
