Part of the rebuild was to replace the countersunk slotted head screws with countersunk, stainless steel, Allen head screws, I just liked the appearance better.

Just a reminder. When you upgrade to the 520 you need to change the spacer on the way tube between the table and head stock. It is wider.

The one on my machine is 1 7/16" wide. Are you buying the upgrade new from SS? I don't know for sure but I would be surprised if they don't supply it.

I like the appearance and functionality of these. Did your local nut and bolt supplier stock them or did you order them from someone?

The machine is a testament to your workmanship and is beautifully restored.

I like it but I have a question. When did SS change from counter sunk screws to pan head? My new from SS 1994 510 now MK 7 had pan head screws as does the double tilt up grade. The eBay castings (vintage unknown) I bought for my shorty also have pan head screws.

I donno. Sometime after 1981. I believe when they were calling them a Mark 5, they had the csink screws.

What did they call the 1981? 5 or V?

It is my guess that this "rubber baby bumper" thingy is not a critical part. My measures 1 15/32". Three machines and three different readings all "close enough for Government work". All that happens as a result of the rubber bumper is that the saw blade, even with the quill fully retracted, may not be located exactly in the center of the table cut out.

Now I know where that humongous alignment error that I have been experiencing comes from. My rubber baby bumper is over sized.

BTW JJ - The results of your 520 conversion are fantastic.

It is rubber! Mine is likely the 'oldest'.


Rubber shrinks.

Rubber stretches when it gets 'hot'.

So 1 7/16 +- 1/16. Only affects blade centering!
