I am sure Skip painted it, his balancing drill holes have the grayish, ER color paint in them, and also on the side where he took off some metal for balancing is smooth and not rough casting like in other areas.

Today I got my super duper Digital Lazar RPM/tachometer. Both Ers have Speed Changers on them, with 0-5 range scales. Now I understand/know how I set the belt tension has some effect, da da da. I used the same drill press chuck with the strip on it. They all have the same manufacturer of cogged belts on them.
#1 ER @ 0 and eye balling the belt in the sheave to full, 449rpm.
@ 5 and eyeballing the belt in the sheave to full, 1550rpm.
#2 ER doing the same thing as above, 0 and belt to the full sheave 465rpm.
@ 5 and same thing one belt level in the sheave, 1525rpm.
No I did not do a Dusty, get my Indicator gauge out for belt levels in the sheave to be consistent, that is the variable or a belt tension gauge, which I dont have, measure motor mounting height. So not a pure scientific comparison. I do appreciate Dustys scientific to every detail ones though. Close enough for S n Gs.
After I get the new 5.5" pulley on the DP I will up date the rpms. I got a 19" belt today but may take a day or 2 to get it on. If you have an ER with a SC you know it takes a bit of work to pull all off and redo. We had a 70*ish day today, and tomorrow b4 a cold front and rain for a few days, so needed time out in the yard for those things today.

I dont know how to take your comment John, I am thinking if OEM the speeds would be in the 425-1450 range? As the original speeds are listed? Dont get me wrong, I am not taking yours negativity.

The point is that Magna had the speeds correctly 60+ years ago as your "high tech" digital tach proved.

I got it JB, and you have to hold the Lazar thing REAL steady for an accurate reading!!!! Not to mention my trip to the ER for my eyes to see if it was working No, Just kidding, I know better

'Nominal' range is 425 - 1600

It is a belt/pulley drive and adjustable besides.


± 10 to 20 % variation would be expected, so belts etc. not withstanding, your observations are well within a reasonable expectation.

It is a finished project.
322 rpm @ 0 setting.
1090 rpm @ 5 setting.
29" belt was too big, no 28.5", 28" is just fine.

John, the nice has to go to Skip. I just had to install it.
On a few post back, about them getting the speeds right, with a SC, I am sure it was done on a slide rule. No computer model/program.
That guy sure knew how to build quality, I hope in his after life he has the opportunity/way of seeing what he built that lasted decades. I wont be around most likely in a century after the first E went out, born in 52, maybe, but I bet SS does a big thing about it if still around and I would love to see the pics of ones that post theirs still in operation/restored.
