I will indeed submerge it complete. See this post in a really large thread back in 2009 about how mickeyd did his. http://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/viewt ... 050#p43050 Only one of my systems requires this process.

Another plug for JPG who told me to fabricate a smaller PVC pipe sealed at both ends to go down the center of the Tubes while soaking in Evaporust to reduce the volume of Evaporust required to submerge. I put sand in mine before sealing them to help with a buoyancy issue I thought might be a problem. Works great.

The Evaporust can be used over a number of times, especially if you really clean off oils, dirt and other contaminants on the tubes before you insert them.

It would be prohibitively expensive to submerge an entire system in Evaporust for me, so the electrolysis has real appeal there. It would work on other steel parts and has the benefit of stripping the paint in the process.

The PVC method doesn't take quite a quart to cover the tubes with the PVC center pipe.

Read through that other thread to learn even more if you are really interested in either process.

I will try your method to use the scotch brite and let it run down to get it more manageable.

I've seen no mention of oxalic acid. Cheap, made from rhubarb thus environmentally friendly. Anybody tried it?

'Natural' stomach juices include hydrochloric acid, does the make HCl 'safe'? :D

At a low enough molarity, sure! :D :D

To fill in the numbers, pick up a paint stick of your choice of colors at your local paint store or paint section of the local big box store. Once it is applied to the sunken areas, the excess will easily wipe off the polished surface, but the indented section will remain, provided the rubbing is not too hard. Hope to see your finished product.

I have not used that, only Vinegar, and Evaporust, or progressive sanding grits and progressive polishing compounds. The Electrolysis is going to be my first doing it alone. I had a buddy I helped resurrect a Lazarus unit that was submerged in Katrina storm surge for two weeks, then stored in a warehouse 6 months which wasn't kind to it at all. Man I wish now we had taken pictures.
