Needing to confirm the Fafnir bearing sizes before I order. They are pricey. Please confirm that I need two for the Quill (202KLL3), and 2 for the Drive Sleeve (202KLL2).

I did find a local place that can get the genuine Fafnirs in about 4-5 days (not that I'm in a hurry), and they will press them on for me at no charge. Having never done this before, it might be a good idea to have them pressed on by the professionals.

The quill is 202KLL3 as you said but the drive sleeve is 205KLL2 not 202KLL2.

Give A & W in Dallas a call. When I did my first one I checked around a few places and they were as cheap as anyone. As far as installing them yourself it is really dead easy.

Everett (and others), in resposnes to your post, I measured the runout (with belt off of pulley) at the fully retracted and full extended positions of the quill with headstock, and carriage and quill all locked down. I even went an extra step and measured runout with quill extended about halfway. Runout appears to be about equal at all 3 positions (apprx. .002").

If I understand your post correctly, that should translate to the spindle not being bent, and that runnout may be cured with new bearings?? Correct??

While I am at it, which bearings are most important for minmizing runout, the Quill or the Drive sleeve bearings? I am thinking it is the quill bearings; and, if so, is it okay to just replace those and not the drive sleeve bearings?

Thanks again to all for particpating in this thread.

Those in the Quill are most relevant, but you should be able to determine the general condition of the bearings by rotating them after you disassemble the quill, and make a go/no go decision.

They can be pricey, and only you can weigh the potential benefit you 'might' get from replacing them.

If I were a .002 over the range of the quill extended, I wouldn't change a thing personally unless you can hear noise or feel roughness in them.

Just the moisture in the air will cause wood to expand and contract with the humidity. I cannot envision creating a joint in wood with no room to expand and contract some since the two pieces will likely expand at different rates even if they were cut from the same stock.

If I want tight tolerances I am more than likely working with metal, and using a metal lathe.

What value do you place on moving from .0020 to .0013 for example? Moreover, your dial indicator must be exceptional quality to really accurately measure meaningfully to ten thousandths of an inch.

You have to make the call on what is of value to you.

Thank you Everett. You have been extremely helpful. Since I do have the 2 10er's, I may just buy the bearings to have them on hand, when either needs replacing. I do note that the pulley (with belt removed) on the drill press 10er does not turn as smoothly as the other 10er. Maybe, bearing replacement is coming on that one in the near future.

You are most welcome. Everyone in the forums are generally willing to share their thoughts and experiences and that makes this site exceptional in my mind. Many are my friends and mentors already.

I have removed the rubber seals on one before and replaced the grease with some highly improved grease, and they run more smoothly now with the same bearings. I used an anti-wear, extreme-pressure, lithium-complex grease with anti-friction additive PL-10 from MuscleLubricants.com

I understand buying bearings and being ready, yet when you consider the 10E was made by Magna 70 Years ago, and some of mine still have the original bearings, be sure your grand-children know where you put them just in case they need them someday! LOL

Everett, you are absolutely correct about this being a great site with many great members.

I'll give getting the bearings a little extra thought before I take the plunge. Around $30.00 for the 202kll3 and $40.00 for the 205kll2. No shipping charge, however. That still comes out to about $150.00 with tax.

As I said Dan call A & W Bearings in Dallas. 214-630-7681. I just got off the phone with them.
