I pulled the bearing and Gilmer drive. . It does not have a clutch, it is one solid piece from what I can tell. I will also need a new pork chop and a wave washer for the quill lock as it is missing.

I would at least try to salvage the speed control. One(?) rivet and a strip of spring steel?

I ordered the pork chop and the wave washer the other day with some of the things from the sale ad. I am also going through the parts and adding the lubrication holes where they are now located.

I am also trying to determine how long I want my shorty to be. I was thinking about starting with shortening the tubes by 14 inches, if that proves to be too long I can always shorten it again later. I want it to be a sanding station/band saw stand with maybe an occasional use as a drill press. I am not sure if I want to build a second shorty with the parts left over from my 510 to PP upgrade as well.

I inspected the drive shaft after removal of the Gilmer drive and bearings. The set screw from the Gilmer drive made several severe gouges in the drive shaft slipping off the flat area on the shaft. There were a couple of other scratches as well. I have filed down the metal around the gouges/scratches to be even with the drive shaft. I can sand and then polish it but I am not sure what the finish should be other than it should not be a mirror finish. I was thinking of sanding to about 800 grit. Does anyone see a problem with this or have a better idea of what the surface finish should be sanded/polished to?

IIUC where the gouges are, I would stop with filing down to original od.

I assume we are dealing with PO damage(loose set screw), rather than damage that occurred while removing the gilmer pulley from the shaft?

It may have been a loose set screw but it may also have been a catch as there is no clutch by a PO that did the damage since it is fairly deep in a radial direction.

I'll just clean up the rust and smooth out the metal around the gouges.
