I'm ok with squirrels, greater chance of discovering what exactly is the problem. Thank you everyone for you inputs - I hope they keep coming!

Mark,

When you posted your picture, you captioned it "As I understand, infeed is to the left in photo" Yes, you are correct, in that photo, infeed is from the left.

When you made your test pass described in your original post, did you feed from the infeed side or from the outfeed side?

And, to help us all be better able to help you, it may take someone with planer experience who lives near you to take a look. Can you add your location to your profile, or just give us a general idea of where you live?

Did the knives initially cut or did they not?

I can't make your assumption UNLESS it is determined that there actually was no cutting action by the knives. The knives would not cut if the work piece was fed in from the wrong side. At best the knives would do some scraping action but it sure would not sound sweet.

This is why I wish I could touch and feel. I want to put power on the feed motor an watch the direction of rotation. Is there any reason why that can not/should not be done with the feed motor unmounted so that you can see the drive gear?

That would eliminate one squirrel. It needs to rotate 'counter clockwise' viewed from the shaft end.

The motor shaft or the feed roller shafts? I believe you are saying the motor shaft with it dismounted and held so as to view the motor shaft. Yes, CCW.

The off-set motor shaft coming out of the gearbox? That I checked and witnessed a CLOCKWISE rotation of the shaft - looking directly at the shaft.

When you reassembled the motor if the housing, end caps, etc. were not aligned as they were originally the motor might be reversed. I have never taken one of these apart and reassembled but there may be markings that indicate proper alignment. I don't know this, just a thought. I do know the magnet orientation with respect to the armature is a factor in direction of rotation.

Well, Mark said a CW rotation and both you and JPG said CCW. It shouldn't mater how the motor is attached (assuming it can be attached rotated in some other orientation) on the direction of the feed.

The way the armature is wound and the polarity of the magnets definitely make a difference in the rotation. I have not checked, but did Mark say he had the armature re-wound? Hmmm...
