Not realized by us outlanders, but bearings have been metric for a very long time. The number/nomenclature is based on metric dimensions. For those requirements that demand an imperial(inch) dimension the part number codes are tweaked.

Case in point the original quill bearing(M5) is a 6202-10-... which translates to 5/8" id x 35mm od x 11mm wide...

Interesting. Too bad it's not been more widely adopted over here.

Actually it has been this way a long time. Problem is imperial shaft sizes 'over here'.
