Farmer,
Buy an Intel Mac - you can then run WinXP, Vista, Windows7, Linux, or (of coarse) OS X. I had my MacBook running in a triple boot scenario with Ubuntu, WinXP, and OS X - lots of fun! Nice thing about a Mac it is very simple to "clone" the hard drive (or partition), then wipe everything clear & clone it back. Back when Boot Camp was in beta a person on the Apple Discussions wondered if he could format the drive & install nothing but WinXP - so to test this I did it. After confirming that it works, I wiped the drive & cloned back my OS X install - all in the matter of a few hours (most of which was installing WinXP).
If after buying the Mac you decide you don't want it, they actually hold their resale value quite well - so buy a new (or refurb) MacBook. If you qualify for the education or US gov't discount go that route. I've never had to "list" a used Mac - my coworkers buy them before I need to!
Be careful with that Mac thinking, I did it about 4-5 years ago - then sold all my PC boxes & went all Mac!I'm going to buy something like an imac g4 just to learn it and may move that direction next.
