You might consider a clear finish. Something to protect the wood. It doesn't take much to leave smudges or stains on bare wood like that. Maybe a semi-gloss poly, shellac, or even a good coat of wax.

I actually like the flat look of the frame as-is and I think it complements the painting really well. IF you finish it, I hope you find a finish that keeps the same aesthetic. JMO. Of course, pine will naturally yellow with time so a true clear finish on it could protect it from this.
