Possible Restoration

Initially 900 seems a bit steep for a 500 without a joiner. Worth a look and some bargaining. Your local market will dictate the value. I've noticed here in Southern California similar or higher pricing for the newer units,usually with several SPT's. It's the missing little parts like chucks,arbors, and the like that can really add up and ruin a "Good Deal". Good Luck with the search.

You all are making good points.

Yes, the tool has been on the market since February and it obviously isn't going anywhere fast, I'm betting cash waved under the nose will speak volumes.

I'm going to have to take a good look at it when I get the opportunity to make sure what is there because the point is well made that small missing things can make a big $$ difference.

I just think that a tool that retails for 2K getting it for less than half price and with such little usage and the addition of something like the bandsaw, It's a spanking good deal for me.

And I'm much more interested in a bandsaw than a jointer. I still have my planer and I can use that as a jointer, in fact it has been my jointer for many years now, the bandsaw though to me means re-saw capabilities and here in Missouri I have virtually unlimited access to beautiful Oak and Walnut and Juniper

The price might be a bit higher than many online offers but it appears to be in good condition. The accessories do add some value. Apparently you are in an area where there are few offerings. The principles of supply and demand tends to increase the value (in this case).

It boils down to how much you want to spend on an older machine and how good a condition it really is. Appearance can be deceiving.

Dusty makes the point, the Shopsmith isn't readily available here in SW Missouri for some reason.

I see cheaper deals online, eBay and such, but my fear with them is condition. I have to see something, even lay hands on it, to know condition.

And transportation for me is a big thing as well. So what if I get a good deal on a SS in Maryland or Oregon? I still have to go and get the silly bugger or pay a couple hundred for shipping and hope it doesn't get ruined.

And since our move here I lost my pickup so I have to rely on friends for something big like this, so really to find something in my "back door" is worth a lot to me.

I can add the SPT's later, they are good bargains online and those I would be willing to purchase "blind." I mostly care about the basic machine, being in good condition so I can use it as-is. I honestly don't see myself buying a ton of extras for it. I am a journeyman cabinet maker but I've given it up and work full time for the church now and this will be hobby, remodel and repair and such. I mean, really who can't live without the basic tools to make sawdust!

I do agree that $900 is high for a model 500. However if it has been well cared for and free of rust it would be worth doing some negotiating for. I bought my 500 in '83 and was happy as a lark with it for many years until upgrading to 520. That's the beauty of this machine. You can always upgrade later if you wish.

Regardless of your decision, we are glad to have you aboard with us here on the Shopsmith forum.
