If so, that is probably OKAY because for shaper mode the headstock is near the pivot point and below the table. Center of gravity and principles of leverage are working for you rather than against you.
You are correct - it only provides assistance into over table mode (drill press mode), not under-table mode (shaper/router). You must use the quick disconnect on the lift-assist to go into under-table mode.

Your conclusion about needing it only on one end is what I came to as well - with the headstock all the way against the pivot and everything locked in place, you have a long lever that should give you plenty of advantage.
