My construction Shopsmith surprised me with how stable it was in the drill press mode. The 10" wheels (40 psi) flexed very little when in use. I used the drill press mode many times while adding a 1000 sg ft addition to our home. The weight of the wood frame is more than the original steel frame. I used 2" lumber with screws when building this machine. A 2" X 12" board length wise is used in the middle of the frame as the backbone. No drawings was used. The Shopsmith had falling from a pickup truck with the legs torn off. So replacement legs could not be used.

For someone with 20 some odd shopsmiths why not take 4 of them there, put one in the block building, put one in the house and tack up some plastic in the porch for weather protection for another and if need be tent one out back somewhere. If they get rusty then sell them cheap and move on or clean them up and move on. With so many machines why not get some use out of them?

Reviving this thread since I have reason to look at mobility again now. We have a rental house about 15 to 20 minutes away that needs some kind of serious remodeling. This is now our only rental, we used to deal with 4 of them. This one is a 4 bedroom house that used to be a village store and a block garage/shop that used to be the village automotive garage sitting on about 17 acres of Big Flatrock River which is mostly woods and rocks.
I have an old Craftsman bench tablesaw on a roll-around base that I have taken over there and left there to use in past years but this time due to the extent of work I want to do I'm thinking I want a Shopsmith there to use.
The Shopsmith I take will be stored in the house since it has a little heat going in cold or damp weather and the block building gets pretty damp. I want easy mobility because I may at times want to set up in the screened in porch out front or on the wood deck out back to avoid excess sawdust in the house. I also will be doing some serious work in/on the block building which sits about 75 feet away. All of it will be done in my usual badly organized, on again off again, manner. It will likely take much more time than I really want to give it but it can make us a decent penny over the next few years that it just doesn't command as it sits now.
When I quit for the day and I am beat I don't want to be wrestling a Shopsmith over elevation changes or high thresholds. I want to just grab and roll.
This thread was 2012 and I was wondering if anyone had come up with anything different since then.
One reason I want a Shopsmith there is that I can have a jointer handy and while I only kept one bandsaw I could toss it in the old work van and take it along if I really needed it. I do have several of the old SS jigsaws and they are good at many cuts that a bandsaw can do. Of course there is a lot of sanding capability there too as well as other SS functions. Makes just a tablesaw seem almost useless.

Any new mobility ideas?

I would hazard a guess that he does not want to store anything that will rust in the 'block' building etc..

Yeah that block building is leaking and stays quite damp.
As far as those other SS's go, most of them are in stacks of parts. As some long timers might recall I was buying up a bunch of SS's because at that time (Gee, that has been a few years now) Many of us were very much afraid that SS was going to go down the tubes at any moment... I was setting up my shop as Shopsmith based and was concerned about being able to get parts if I needed them in a few years. I'm really glad Shopsmith apparently pulled it out of the fire over a period of years. I happened to have some money for shop stuff "available" at the time (I can't really call it "extra") so I started buying SS's and traveling to pick them up as a sort of vacation catch up. I was a good 20 years behind on vacation taking. There were a lot of great road trips.

It is not exactly the same but if you Google "deer cart" some of the simple ones are a bit like the undercarriage I am currently considering building and mounting so that it sits under the headstock end and being able to raise that end about 3" to 4" off of the floor and then having something like removable wheel barrow handles at the other.
Still brain storming... Well, raining at least.
