Has anyone tried some of these.

I did a search for Shopsmith on amazon under tools. came up with these wheels. They look ok, but would require cutting off the old ones and installing a bolt.

Do the Shopsmith casters require modifying or drilling inorder to fit. It should be just pull of the old and push on the new.

I did these the last time the upgraded caster discussion came up. They work really well once you start moving but changing direction is a pain. They do work much better then the original casters but I am still ordering the larger ones before the price increase.

Any other Mark VII owners out there been able to successfully upgrade the casters on these machines? There are a couple of variables that would seem to make this mod tricky. Any advice would be appreciated.

I have not given much thought to upgrading either of mine but I agree it could be tricky on the regular set since they sit up inside of the base legs (I guess you would call them "legs").

I did the general maintenance/lube/clean routine on my 510 yesterday On a lark, I pulled the standard/factory-original casters out and coated the stems with B'LASTER Garage Door Lube. I've been using this stuff on the pork chop teeth too.

Wow, what a difference! Changes directions easily, even on the end with the jointer mounted, and reduced the number of 4-letter words in my vocabulary when I'm trying to move things around. If it had not worked, an order to SS was going to be in the works for the upgrade.

 I installed the SS caster wheels and followed the instructions provided without any problems whatsoever. It seems the the clearance to the floor is very 'close', but still rolls very well. I have four original caster wheels for sale to whoever may be interested.

Casters revisited

I bought the casters right when they were announced and had template problems. I had mentioned my efforts in the email group but not here.

Not long after I mentioned my problems, Shopsmith emailed me, so they must have been reading and been concerned. I said it was basically in the corner for the winter (bandsaw handy for firewood), and would look in the spring.

Spring is here, and today I wanted to check here and see if the washer trick would work. (Now I have misplaced in my mind which post!).

In all the 24 pages no one mentione my issue with the template that got me in trouble:

Received the wheels lightning fast and turned the machine over with my wife. (She helped, I did not turn her).

The first thing I noticed was the template reference holes not lining up with the spacing of the original bracket holes. No one has mentioned that here.

I had a choice: Pick one hole of the template per leg and drill the second one using the actual separation of the old holes.

Then I chose to err on the side of the wheels not being retracted ENOUGH.

Wrong choice, now I get the leg scraping syndrome. I also get interference of the levers and wheels.

1. Should I re-drill or are (likely) the holes too close for safe drilling.

2. What washers should I buy? I will likely by a box full anyway... (I'll go over the forum again anyway).

3. Make a sticky of the suggestions at top of post.

Thanks!
