Just a heads up guys, that I am now the proud owner of a Shopsmith 10-er! Here's a picture of the thing when it first showed up; I've spent the day taking it apart and scrubbing/sanding away the rust. She's getting nice and silver again (I've still got a lot of work to do on that bench). The motor runs beautifully too!

My housemates and I need to clear out an extra storage room before it can be put to use, but I'm excited!

I've got a question guys. I just bought this chuck:

I'm now looking for a tailstock chuck arbor. I know shopsmith sells them, but I've also heard that the shopsmith tailstock is a standard 2 Morse Taper. I'd love to save some $ buying an off-brand arbor, but I don't know what kind of fit that Jacobs bit would need to attach to.

It's a JT3. There's a whole bunch of other options]
Drill chuck - Bingo! You got a Model 10 vintage besides(IMHO the best).



P.S. The CL pix shows the socket it mounts into.


Nix in the adapter. You need a #2MT(male) to 5/8" straight male.

I actually had my eye on that tailstock arbor you linked to, I was just hoping there was a cheaper, off-brand alternative. C'est la vie!

I'm thinking of picking up a Nova g3 with the adapter and a pair of 45mm spigot jaws from a friendly ebayer for $160, shipped. Whadda ya thinK?

Also, hey, I've got another question. I'm gonna be sharpening my chisels with the sanding disc, as well as doing a decent amount of shaping with it. I'd rather not lay down a bunch of money for adhesive-backed, 12" sanding discs (and it's hard to find in the ~320 to ~600 grit range).

I'd rather just buy cheap, standard paper. Is there a particular adhesive I could use to attach the sandpaper without making a mess? I know that's how they did it in the good ol' days. That'd make reusing paper easier as well.

3M 77 spray adhesive works for me. FYI, a standard sheet of sand paper does not cover the entire disc.

Here's a tip:
Clean the disc with mineral spirits or Denatured alcohol and let it dry.
Spray the back of the paper with the adhesive.
Affix the sprayed paper to the disc and place it face down a flat surface add some weight to the back of the disc and let dry for 20-30 minutes.

Trim off any paper that exceeds the circle.

Attach the sanding disc. before turning on, locate the shortest side of the paper. Rotate the disc by hand an use a pencil to mark the extent of the circular pattern available for sanding. Using the paper outside of the circle will result in uneven sanding and excess wear on your disc.

BTW, in my experience, you get what you pay for when it comes to abrasives.

I find when I use cheap sandpaper, I go through it way faster, than quality stuff when I buy that. Just my experience and opinion.
