My wallet is firmly shut and will stay like that. :p

I still have an old shop iMAC running OS-X. Works, nothing exciting.
Our 2 phones are of course Android as is the tablet. Works.
Everything else is Linux and unless things change a lot, always will be...

If you ever read of me ever paying Microsoft for anything you should run outside and look to see if it is all over...

I smile when I think of Gates and group and their attempt to SELL unix (though I think the version was BSD and might have been called xenix). It was the early 80s and I can barely remember last week! :p , so details are murky. I wonder what a mess it would have been and if Linus T would have tried to make CPM or DOS into an open source?

Yesterday I happened to be digging through piles of stuff and found my 386SX. upgraded to 4MB at $100 a meg! I was the envy of most everyone in my building because I had a computer and a subscription to GENIE!! I sort of miss that time.

Be well,

Uh!!!!!!
Unix was invented by AT&T which then licensed it to various companies.
BSD was the University of Berkley's, Zenix was Microsoft, AIX was IBM's and there were others. At&t eventually sold rights to Novell which then sold it to Santa Cruz Operations SCO. It then became open source and is used in many operating systems the biggest is Apple OS. Linux is a clone of UNIX.

Not so funny actually. Apple is selling their operating system today and it is BSD which is Unix. If Apple can do it, why can't Microsoft?

Actually Apple gives it''s users their operating system since about 2or 3 years ago. Why do you think Microsoft is doing it?

It isn't free if you have to pay $1200 for a $300 device before you can have the operating system.
Free would be for everybody, even those smart enough to not pay Apple's inflated prices.

I am still a skeptic about this free Windows upgrade offer but I am also skeptical about the availability of $300 computers as a counter position. I was at Computer Renaissance yesterday and I saw NO computers there for $300; not even reconditioned computers.

I did find some really neat cases for desktops. I have been toying with the idea of repackaging and possibly upgrading one of mine but the prices that I saw yesterday alerted the cheapskate in me. I left without buying anything. I did see some really cool TOYS there.

The $90 price tag for a new Gigabyte or ASUS motherboard caught my eye. Then I found out that they both would also need a new processor. That caught my eye also. $250 for a processor. WOW. Not as long as my old AMD Athlon 64x2 keeps crunching along. Might clean this unit out and put in some new thermal paste to help keep the processor cool.

Yeah ... frugal and skeptical.

I'm frugal and skeptical too, so we are alike there. I have an entire network of computers running in my house. The desktops were purchased used for $30-$75 each. Three of them are running as workstations for my Wife and myself, and three more are running as servers. I have a file server to back up all our files from the workstations. Another one serves as my HTTP server to deliver files to the outside world. A third one serves as my security system, capturing video from my security cameras.
I also have two laptops I purchased used for $100 each to handle work when I need one out of the house. They all run Linux, so I have no money at all invested in software. Total, for all 8 machines, I have around $500 invested. That wouldn't buy me half a computer from Apple, and only a single one running Windows.
Since I don't run Windows, I have no need for Windows 10, even if it were free, and for me, it wouldn't be because I never bought Windows 7 or 8 either.

I have been computer shopping long enough to know that yes you can buy a really nice PC for $ 300. But I also know to get a PC that equals the Apple you will spend at least as much or more than you would pay for the Mac. Price a PC that has a high speed solid state hard drive, resolution better than 1920 x 1080, fast 8 gig of memory, quad core cpu. I guarantee it will cost a lot more than $300.

I brought a refurnished PC from Staples last year with Windows 7 on it for around $150. I have been very happy with it. This is one of the latest PCs from Staples that has Windows 7 Pro as the OS.
Refurbished Dell 760, 1TB Hard Drive, 4GB Memory, Intel Core 2 Duo, Win 7 Pro Item: 110072 / Model : ST1-0017 $159.99

You need to get it unpacked quickly and checked out as you can still return it if it does not operate correctly.

I know I will ruffle some feathers and I am sorry but you don't really start paying for an Apple until after you own one. For those who are die hard Apple users, I hope you get as much out of yours as I do my aging Windows systems.

BTW .... is there anyone out there needing a copy of Windows NT or Windows 95. I might be able to help for a very small price. I have a couple 8" floppy drives too and floppies "new in the box"..

My problem is I still have XP with internet explorer 8 and/or the latest copy of chrome that wil install on my machine and it seems everyday another site tells me they no longer support my level chrome or explorer.
Also when I sign into chrome I get a warning that my chrome is so old that it can compromise data.
If I want to go online I no longer have a choice. I have to upgrade my equipment. More memory, a new graphics card, and etc.

Dusty don't miss what I was saying about Apple. They simply don't make cheap machine. Apple uses very high speed solid state hard drives. Graphic that have higher definition than 1920x1080 , they use ipc displays, high speed memory, the latest Intel cpu's and etc. if you price a PC with the same features it will cost as much if not more that the apple.

I have priced out Dell, HP, Lenovo, Toshiba, Asus that have equal specs. And they all cost as much or more than a Apple MacBook Pro 13.3 laptop. In fact to get equal resolution and high speed solid state hard drive I have to pay nearly $500 more than the apple.

If any one knows of a PC with 4k resolution the latest i5 cup, high speed solid state hard drive for less than $1300 let me know.
