Windows 10 free offer

Post by ryanbp01 »

I recently received a free offer from Microsoft to upgrade to Windows 10 at the end of the month. Has anyone else received this and is considering it?

It is indeed a free upgrade but works with selected versions of Windows 7 SP1 and 8.1 for the free upgrade.

Business and Enterprise customers have a different distribution network than general consumers.

You have the offer to upgrade for example Windows 7 Professional with Service Pack 1 as I use, free for 1 year. If you elect NOT to upgrade during that year after Windows 10 release at the end of this month, you would have to purchase Windows 10.

See https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows ... 10-upgrade

And https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/features for a video on it.

If you have been applying windows updates you might want to take notice of the little icon at the bottom right of your screen that looks like this:

Click on it for more information and if you want to sign up for your free copy.

I've been a tester for a while and I think I qualify because of that too, in fact I think they want you to continue to be a tester for the foreseeable future....

I've really never had much of an issue with windows except for one version and I have been at this since the beginning being a beta tester at work from before windows was ever released. I have no problems with windows 8.1 which is my main operating system at the moment, when the new release comes out I will be waiting for it to reach my computer.........

Much of 10 that I've been testing is voice control and activation. Really amazing stuff. Makes Dragon NS seem like tin cans and string and gives Siri something to aim for!! you (JPG) MAY be able to have you Start button just for show. :D There will be some HUGE caveats!! Later...

Over 25 years ago I designed a one off DOS based GUI that we sold to Gates and group. When I came back to Montana, I kept my status to get SDKs and have been able to beta test a variety of their software. If 10 delivers as it seems it will, it is a gigantic step. The disadvantage is 10 takes massive control of your system. I was not privy to the internal memo, however wagging tongues have it that this is to provide a much more secure system from hackers. Same story freedom versus safety.

If you are uncertain, you could do a complete backup of 7, another backup of just data and then try 10 for a while. That way you get in on the free upgrade. If you don't like it, copy the latest data, wipe your drive, reinstall your old OS, data and then copy the new data to a new partition. One person is planning on moving ALL data to the cloud   with the idea if they don't want 10 they will just reinstall 7.whatever and keep using their cloud accounts. To each their own.

To update or not to update, that is the question, Whether it is nobler in the mind, blah blah blah... :p If you are a renegade, rebel or just like more control then Linux is your world and I think that is just fine. If you want to have a system where others have control but you get to use it for a fee, then Windows is your game (no it is NOT quite that simple but just how long to do want me to keep playing mediator!?! :)

Not certain if I was ever thinking of being a black hat. but that part of me has long since given into other pursuits (like making shavings and saw dust). I never turn on my Linux machine anymore and the Mac Pro I got for making iPhone apps is thick with dust. We need to enjoy the time we have doing the things that make us most happy, anything else is an insult to humanity (JMHO).

Windows 10 is an amazing stab at trying to create a one size fits most.

Be well,
Ben

I am a skeptic. I believe that no one, especially operations like Microsoft, does anything for free. Somehow Microsoft will come out the winner and since there can be no winner without a loser.........

When and if I ever chose to go for Windows 10 (or later), I will pay for my copy.

This, BTW, comes to you from an XP machine that not too long along was an NT machine. I must admit that I have experienced some degradation in the quality of streaming video that may be the direct result of its' obsolescence.

For me, the unanswered question is what happens if I want to do a clean install of Win 10 13 months after I upgrade. Will I be able to do so for free or is that when I have to open my wallet? And, if I can do it for free, will I have to first install my old OS and upgrade again or will I be able to install Win 10 natively?
