ERLover wrote:Mike, why not concrete? Portland cement, sand and agate? It is more structurally sound. Mortar, Portland cement and sand will break up even under vibration/lathe work. Granted Mortar is easier to mix and pack into the tubes, but will break down easier then a concrete mix. I would use the bagged 5000 mix, I think it has some fiberglass fibers and epoxy in it.
Yes, The mix will cure in the middle. It would just take a little longer. You can go with the concrete mix if desired. It's just easier to solid pack the tubes if no gravel.

Like to see it if you get a chance. I can't quite visualize what you described.

Thanks guys!

This has had a domino effect on my shop. That corner formerly held a full size Shopsmith in permanent drill press mode...with junk piled on the bench tubes. Now it's my tool corner and I really like it.

Nice job on the cradles. I have one I built from a tilting end of a Mark V, but I think your solution is better. I am envisioning the same thing now, but hinging the ends so it can be collapsed down for flat storage. The EMT makes perfect sense here since it is just for temporary support.
