Ed, So if I got it right each segment is a separate piece of wood and dowels hold them together and allow the open space?
If so, why not cut out the profile from one piece of wood as wide as need, and run it over a table saw blade inverted with the blade set low enough not to cut through to make the slots.
I like it, other then have to open a drawer each time I need a knife.

That is a cool idea Ed. Thanks for the idea!

I have always liked knife blocks, my mom had one my whole growing up years, and, like I said, bought my wife a very expensive quality one early in our marriage which she still uses daily.

As a newbie to woodworking, this was/is an exercise in woodworking for me as much as anything. I may even make a couple of them and give one away. It appeals to me to be able to veneer another, cheaper wood, with a beautiful grain like curly Maple.

I am building/rebuilding her kitchen and your drawer thingie is a great idea! I will probably do one for her as well ....

The trouble with wood working, is that there are so many projects, and with me, so little time .... :D

I was in a kitchen supply store and saw a neat rack the would fit in a drawer. I drawer a paper copy and made one. You can make it as wide as you want since every section is cut on the bandsaw and held to the adjacent one next to it with a dowel.

I left them un finished they were made from maple. I touched them with wet hand to take these pictures.

Excuse the mess in the knife drawer, there is a mix of steak knifes, and floral knifes also in the drawer. Any loose sharp knives have sheafs.

Yes each section holds 3 1/2 knifes two small and one long. I widened the saw kerf between sections to allow a long knife. The idea of the whole things is it can grow or shrink as your need to store knives increases or reduces. I guess ideally and probably what I was thinking when I made this was to build it with enough sections to fill the width of the knife drawer. However proof of concept and all plans were lost when wife said this is exactly what she wanted and took it out my hands and left the shop with it.

Very nice job, Ed! Looks like something I (we) could use in this house.

Excuse the mess (clutter) in the knife drawer???? Your drawer looks good!
My sweet wife uses the stuff system in her drawers. The defination of that system is: "If the drawer can close, it's all good."

The other day a drawer wouldn't close easily so she gave it a "little" slam. That maneuver led me to re install the broken drawer slide. :(

John,
It is not a point or argument other than why does it make any difference weather the knife is ground to a particular angle for any cut of meat or vegetable? If you see a difference you are a better man than me.
The way it was explained to me is a wider angle holds an edge longer, so for chopping that is better, a lesser angle can get sharper and cut easier but wont hold an edge as long.
