This is what I get when I try to resize a picture.

While what you've shown there is a rather ingenious setup, its solving a problem that I don't believe exists. When mounted on the far outside hole and turned perpendicular to the shopsmith center line, the lathe tool support will extend to approximately one inch beyond center, and cover a 10" diameter (5" radius) turning. When the tool holder is placed in the closer hole and again situated perpendicular to center line, the tool holder will then extend the tool reach to 8" radius (16" diameter) from center line, exceeding the swing over size of the lathe, which I believe is limited to around 14" diameter. I understand your desire to get your tool closer to the work but I believe that would best be solved by using the "S" shaped tool rest shown in the photo below, your solution appears to replicate the access of the existing tool rest. The photo also shows the access available with the standard tool rest, which appears to be sufficient for most turnings. If I've missed something in the discussion please excuse me, I am also far from an expert in turning on the ShopSmith, as I have just now got my first project chucked up and partially turned. The tool rest moves father away from the sides as the bowl gets deeper. I have tried a number of ways to get closer to the bottom of the bowl with the normal shopsmith set up and was not able to get it to set close enough to the bottom or sides of the bowl. I appreciate the comments and help I have received. It never hurts to get help. Thanks

I cannot begin to encourage you enough to go back to the quill side of the headstock to work from. Your tool rest works from that side, mounted in the carriage that is there. Folks have been turning bowls on the Shopsmith even 1947 vintage ones for 70 years.

You can too. Doug Reid has some videos out using the Mark 7 PowerPro but aside from slower speeds and reversible motor, it is the same deal.

I have turned some burl bowls in the past that were this size and was able to do it with the standard setup with none of the extras we have discussed here. Those specialty tools make certain tasks easier and quicker, but they are not required.

I don't have a speed reducer which I know would help, but it can be done from the right side of the headstock as it has been being done for decades.

I strongly recommend you go to that approach. You can work from the end of the machine if you slide the carriage and headstock to the right.

Also noted in your photo, the way tubes are not locked down by the latch being open in the photo.

So, yes, I'm still having trouble understanding why this can't be done on a standard Shopsmith using a standard tool rest configuration.
