My early 510 has tube rails with access holes (for the mounting screws).

No! Extension tubes are interchangeable and I am not yet convinced that the rails are not interchangeable. One or two users have claimed problems with alignments due to rail differences but I remain doubtful that rail od was the issue.

Rail ID varies - OD is the same.
