I see from that diagram that the same washer is used in a couple of other places on the machine. You might borrow one of those temporarily, and see if you can get the quill lock functioning with it.

Then if you’re real lucky, and assuming it’s a flat washer, the thickness might even match this washer from McMaster Carr:

The locks on the Model 10ER, and 10E for that matter, use 5/16" flat washers. The flat washer goes against the shoulder on the lock handle. Both the double wedge locks and the single wedge locks (as shown in the diagram Dennis posted before) use a flat washer. You can refer back to the picture I posted earlier in this thread to see the different locks. The washers vary in the outside diameter and thickness. Earlier washers from the 10E's were thicker and close to 7/8" OD. Later washers were thinner and had a slightly smaller OD. Even the inside diameter can vary and this is a 5/16" washer going on a 3/8" shaft. A replacement washer should be able to be found locally at a hardware store. Take your lock lever and wedge with you to check the fit on the lever shaft which should fit snug and that the washer has an OD the same or smaller than the wedge. When putting things back together make sure the flat on the wedge is facing up for the quill lock. Also is the wedge in good shape and the flat spots are not misshaped. Remember the alloy used for the wedges is a soft metal and can be damaged. That is true for the early brass wedges too. If you are wondering about the reference to a spring, some of the double wedge quill locks had a spring between the wedges to help spread them apart when unlocked.

Must be something to do with the wedge. I put one of the same washers from the other lock and quill still moves. Off to find a wedge now. I think.

Late in reading the thread but the 10ER Washer P 1502 shown on all three lock assemblies is listed in the parts list as with specific details of what it is. 3/8" SAE Std.

MAGNA published the specs back in those days and it is sure handy when you need something you can likely find locally. The Exploded Parts Diagrams and Specific Part Descriptions are a real help to me.

Everett is showing the later manual information after the part numbers changed in November 1951. The size I listed is from an earlier Model 10E manual for part number 104-2W. Checking a 10ER manual for part 102-4W it is listed as a 3/8" washer. Either way, 5/16 or 3/8, it should fit snug on the lever shaft when against the shoulder.

Can you post a picture of the wedge? It may help us help you if we can see it.

Yes, I chose the later 10ER parts list as BuckeyeDennis posted a photo from that series of restored manual earlier in the thread. It made it possible to identify the washers.

I agree a photo of your parts would be helpful. I would like to see all the threads on the shaft itself to insure threads aren't deformed just at the point where it tightens. That would match the symptoms of using the wedge with the nut at the end

The headstock and carriage lock shaft are the same part number. You could try the other shaft if that is your issue to see if it locks correctly.

Those show up on eBay from time to time.

Equally, you could stack a series of 3/8 washers to make the threads in a different area of the shaft engage nut at a different place on the shaft.
