The motor was shot when I got it. The magnets had broken loose from the housing, the wiring on the armature was busted up and burned pretty badly. I was careful to re-attach the magnets as they originally were - there were markings that helped with that. I'm also in contact with the company that did the rewinding for me, and they've been saying a lot of what everyone in this thread is telling me too.

So, one thing I can try then, is to rotate the caps half a turn and reattach those - perhaps?

Knowing all I do now with the help of all of you, I may not have had to switch the wires in the motor after-all. Just rotate the caps half a turn. Hmmm. I'm not giving up yet....

We now have the contributing thingie. The motor is running backwards. Now the question is: why did reversing the brush wires not reverse the rotation?

I do not think the rewinding would cause this.

I have been assuming there are only two brushes.

If ALL the magnets are not oriented correctly strange things can occur???

Now how many magnets are there? I assume only two 'pole' magnet structure.

Lotta assuming!!!!

No, I do not believe he said that. He said " After repairing the feed motor and giving a general check-over, I fired the machine up. The sound of wood on the cutters was beautiful! But then my stock stopped on the outfeed side - caught up in the row of "teeth" that dangle between the roller and spacer bar".

As for what has been said about direction of rotation, it is only important to understand what direction IT IS ROTATING so that logical assumptions can be made to fix it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If I properly interpret what Mark has said, his feed motor is turning in the wrong direction. Thus the question - What was done to the motor when he "repaired it"? Was the motor turning in the right direction before that repair? No wayy to know !!! At this point only a rhetorical question.

I examined my motor and I see no obvious markings that would define the intended physical relationship of the motor parts.

Aah, I am guilty. I did not read the entire thread again and thus was unaware of some of what has been reported. Sorry about that.

Be aware Mark that the direction of rotation can be altered by a small degree of improper placement of the magnetic fields. I also know that in some circumstances the magnetic fields can be altered by reapplying 12 volts to the armature in the right polarity. However, I don't know exactly how that is done. Maybe someone else can chime in with the pros/cons and details.

That sounds more like 'polarizing' a new generator. That was done to create residual magnetism in the iron poles so when the armature rotated a small voltage was created that the voltage regulator 'detected' and switched on current to the field windings under later normal use. The poles were 're polarized' every time the field windings were de-energized/

I love it when the collective intelligence and experience of group of people can come together and help out a guy they've never met, and has far less intelligence in the matters of electricity and motors, and truthfully shouldn't have tackled this project.

But a victory has been achieved! My Shopsmith (Mark V) planer is now feeding the correct direction, and cutting my stock in a very satisfactory manner!

Mark, I whole heartedly disagree. This is the way one learns those lessons that never fail to serve us. Believe me, most all of us here on this forum have been where you have just emerged from. Some of us may not admit that but we have been there.

I am pleased to hear that you have resolved this problem while equally curious as to the cause.

One of our unwritten 'rules' here is that when one finally overcomes a problem that is being 'discussed', the resolution of said problem is revealed for all to learn from. So go back and read JSB's post and respond. :cool: TIA

I scribbled on a piece of paper the magnetic stuff that happens(sorta) and have come to the conclusion that he did what he last mentioned - repositioned the brush holder end cap 90°.

I am curious re the positioning(and 'polarity') of the magnets.
