Nope, wrong or broken spring. You can see in JPG's first pic, the slot on the guard and sorta the tang on top of the spring that fits into the slot on the guard. You need part #55, that fits into the slot on part #51A. Check here http://www.shopsmith.com/service/jointe ... iagram.htm
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders, molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop. .

You can save yourself some time by getting familiar with this page, which is linked off the Products menu, above, under Service Parts. Each machine links to the exploded parts diagram, and a separate parts list, with names and prices.
The only problem is that the diagram seems to be for a newer model. For example, I don't think mine has nut -under- the guard (#60a and #60b in the diagram).
I guess I should just call Shopsmith on Monday. I've tried calling them before, but the lady I've spoken with doesn;t really have knowledge about older models.
I just wanna know what parts I need.
Anyhoo, thanks.

Notice the spring hooks into the washer with the hex center hole.

Not sure(seen a LOOOOONG time ago), but more likely a tang on one end and a 'tang' on the opposite end. Also spiraled the correct direction.
Also IIRC the washer was a force fit into the bottom.

As already mentioned, getting the upgrade guard kit is the 'best' option from a safety standpoint. That however loses a feature of the older version(installing guard behind the fence when rabbeting). The new version adds a different guard for that area. This adds more $.
