Nope, wrong or broken spring. You can see in JPG's first pic, the slot on the guard and sorta the tang on top of the spring that fits into the slot on the guard. You need part #55, that fits into the slot on part #51A. Check here

Thanks!
So the parts on the bottom:
What are:
56 - is that the hex washer in my piccie?
57 - is this an ordinary washer?
58 - what is this?
60a, 60b - what are these?
I guess I also need 60c and 60e? What are they?
CHEERS!

You can save yourself some time by getting familiar with
this page, which is linked off the Products menu, above, under Service Parts. Each machine links to the exploded parts diagram, and a separate parts list, with names and prices.

THANKS!
The only problem is that the diagram seems to be for a newer model. For example, I don't think mine has nut -under- the guard (#60a and #60b in the diagram).
I guess I should just call Shopsmith on Monday. I've tried calling them before, but the lady I've spoken with doesn;t really have knowledge about older models.
I just wanna know what parts I need.
Anyhoo, thanks.

This might be too old for your model, but it might be closer to what you have -

An alternative.

Notice the spring hooks into the washer with the hex center hole.

Wow! That looks like -mine-!
The other diagrams I've seen do not.
ENCOURAGING.
It -looks like all I need is a spring with a tang.
Right?

Not sure(seen a LOOOOONG time ago), but more likely a tang on one end and a 'tang' on the opposite end. Also spiraled the correct direction.
Also IIRC the washer was a force fit into the bottom.

Thanks. Does SS sells these older parts? Or do I need to break down and buy a complete guard?
Your advice?

A call to CS should provide that answer.
Have you considered 'making' the spring?
As already mentioned, getting the upgrade guard kit is the 'best' option from a safety standpoint. That however loses a feature of the older version(installing guard behind the fence when rabbeting). The new version adds a different guard for that area. This adds more $.
