Does anyone know the maximum size and width that could be used for the idler wheel on the strip sander? I have some 1 1/2 wide and 2 1/2" high steel idler wheels from the Toyota V6 timing belt area that looks similar to the original steel idler wheel. What is the bolt size that holds the idler wheel? Thanks.

Can't really help ya Bill., But Chuck wrote this on the previous page.

"Size specs for my wheels are: 1.875 diam X 1.875 wide. 1603 2RS bearing. These wheels are not in stock - they had to be manufactured to fit my specs. That's why they are expensive per wheel.

I had to buy longer shoulder screws for these wheels. (a few cents each)"

1/4-20

The mounting screw has a 1" x 5/16" shoulder and 7/16" thread.

The plastic idler is 1 1/8" wide x 1 7/8" od.

The pulley hub extends about 1/8" out from the face on the mounting side, and is inset about 3/8" on the outer side. The mounting screw has a washer between the screw head and the pulley insert hub about .029" thick.

The screw shoulder extends almost 1/8" beyond the extended hub.(1/8" - .029"?)

Also the od has a slight crown 3/16" in from each edge of about .040".

I got tired of the idler wheel problem, and came up with a quick and easy fix. I went to my local skateboard shop, where they gave me some used wheels for free, and I bought a set of bearings and spacers. A local bolt supplier got me 1-1/4 by 5/16 shoulder bolts. The bearings go in the wheels, the shoulder bolt goes in the bearings, the spacer, which on a skateboard goes between the bearings, goes on the bolt, and it screws into the sander. I screw it in snug, and then back off a bit. So I got 4 idler wheels really cheap, under $20!
