Got it. I fully understand the option of looking into a custom coupler if you have nothing to work with at the moment. Curiosity was starting to get the best of me on this one...

Just try not to invest too much time and $$$ in something home built or aftermarket retro.

While looking on a popular internet auction site I saw these aftermarket power coupler alternatives. It is interesting what people are doing with these 3-D printers as demonstrated in the first two photos.

The third photo shows another concept / aftermarket coupler. The rubber coupler might be more forgiving and allow for the same SPT to be used on multiple machines.

Personally I think I will stay with the original equipment. I managed to crack one of my couplers, but it was my fault for not taking the time to properly align the SPT to the headstock..

I am sorry to hear that you broke your coupler. I have a new design which I think is going to be nearly as robust as the original Zytel shopsmith coupler, however you can make it what ever length you like. I would love to send it to you to try. It is different than the wood dowel version I have on ebay now. I will doing some comparative testing and will post the results as a video on you tube within the next week.
