Searching CL ads I came across a beautiful collection of well cared for equipment. What really caught my eye was the statement that it included a collapsible coupler so you could switch out SPTs without moving the headstock!

I emailed the guy with my interest and a few minutes later got a call from a very nice guy, named Bob Shipley.

His innovation was to cut the coupler roughly in two and sand all the raised letters smooth. Then the ends fit in schedule 40 PVC. Drilled for acrylic pins that are held in place by clips. The photos he sent me and gave me permission to post tell the story. He says it works great with no trouble for many years. Use at your own risk.

That should be a much stronger coupler. The shaft body is normally what twists and shears when the SPT jams or hangs. I believe it will still shear at one of the hubs if needed for safety reasons.

I used the following for a coupler replacement a few times. The is from a few years ago:
I replaced the plastic coupler with a Lovejoy L050 with a 5/8" bore
hubs (no keyway) and the associated SOX spider. The three piece unit
(2 hubs plus spider) fit perfect, without need for any modification.
You need two coupling hubs and one SOX spider. I got it all from
www.use-enco.com <www.use-enco.com> . The part number for the hubs is
990-4047 ($3.20) and
for the spider is 990-4042 ($1.94). Enco will sell in small
quantities, which is nice since I ran across several other vendors
with a $50 minimum.

I have also switched to this solution by Enco. I wanted to also note you can get the adapter for a 1/2 inch shaft as used on the magna solutions and it will match the connector to the 5/8 inch drive on your shopsmith. I have found this to be much more stable and strong. With a much more positive response when in use.

Flexible coupler. Fingered hub on each end. A rubber part(spider) connects the fingers.

They are generally used when connecting a motor to a water pump(circulator)in a hot water baseboard heating system or when connecting a hydraulic pump to a motor. They are the shear pin system. The same as the shear pins on a snow blower...

No, the headstock would have to be moved.
They are used to couple a motor to a drive shaft. The rubber dampens vibrations and accommodates some misalignment.
The ones in the picture are used to connect the jigsaw and V-drum sander on my 10er.
