I agree Bob, that last set, especially the 3rd picture, looks to be Red Oak. I was wrong about the poplar.

Used spray adhesive to attach the blue fabric to the foam board and the pictures and newspaper article to the fabric. Pinned the medals and pins to the foam board. Bent a small straight pin to hold down the dog tag chain on the bottom and just let the clamping pressure of the foam board, back, and frame hold the chain at the top. Used 1/8 luan plywood for the back (with a couple coats of the Watco Danish Oil). Found some really small screws and screwed the back and the wall hanger to the frame. One thing I had really wanted to add but never managed to obtain was a Corporal rank patch. I left room for it and it looks like a big empty spot right now but there are a couple of pins there but they're black so kind of blend in to the background. One is his Corporal rank pin, the other is a USMC logo pin.

I see all the little flaws and blemishes. Tear-out, a little ding in the wood, pictures and medals not mounted perfectly square and in alignment with each other, etc. But, I must say I'm still pretty darn proud of it. I can't wait to give it to my dad tomorrow.

You finished in time!!! Major congratulations Heath. It looks fantastic!!! Your now officially a woodworker. (More than I can say but I'll be right behind ya). And the cool thing, like you said, pallet stock!! Total cost is almost nil. All the cosmetic issues only you'll see......it will make it worth that much more once become famous for the 'Heathicus and Heathicus' square peg mock joinery. I'll have to start the Wikipedia page now.

So what's next and when will you start? Those candle lanterns would be nice for mom you know. Don't make her feel left out.

You said there was an empty spot for a corporal patch. I didn't notice it.
How is it staying up? The top corners look like the joints are proud of the surface. The bottom ones appear to be flush.

I just didn't have time to build mom something, so I've pushed that project to Mother's Day. Or maybe a "just because" day between here and there. Her birthday is in September, so that's a long ways off. I still have those plans for the lanterns and I think that African Mahogany that mbcabinetmaker sent is going to work great for that!

Next "big" project is a couple hall/sofa type tables LOML wants me to build.

nomoman, all four corners are the same. In that last group of pictures, the case is on a sheet which is on plush carpet so the corners sink down a bit. But the fingers act as four "legs." However, it is designed to be hung on a wall and I have a wall hanger attached to the back.

(And yes, my photography (and setup for it) leaves a lot to be desired!)
