I'm part way through a 510 headstock rebuild - huge thanks due to this forum!! I'm currently putting an order together for parts missing from the machine & items that need replacing. The speed dial functioned adequately during the short test run I gave the machine before I pulled it apart but the teeth don't look good to me.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to find a picture of what they should look like on this forum or anywhere else so perhaps someone can tell me - do I need a new dial?:

Yes, you need a new or rebuilt speed control knob. This guy rebuilds them and uses a steel insert rather than aluminum. I have also heard that he will rebuild yours specifically if you want to wait and don't want to exchange.

First, welcome to the forum. Here in the U.S. there is a fellow on e-bay that drills out the aluminum gear teeth and replaces them with steel. I had mine done and I have been very happy with his work. The teeth on my speed dial did not look too bad but it would slip a cog or two too often to be exceptable.
Due to the shipping costs etc., You may want to see if there is a machine shop that may be able to do that sort of work (on your side of the 'big blue wet thing") for a reasonable price.

Welcome sir, and so far away. I would check inot freight costs to ship yours. The guy on EBay (listed above) did mine when he got it. I wanted the original back. It came back soon and repainted. He is out of California and I think it was like $17 and he paid shipping one way for me, not sure if you would get the same. He answers e-mail usually same day.

Yeah, he does good work and he also sells them without a core for only $5.00 more.
If he absolutely won't ship to Scotlabd, I will. It's about $15.00 dollars US to get one there, and I just had one of mine rebuilt by him. I haven't installed it yet.
So basically, I would sell you mine for what it cost me to replace it.
But, check with him first, he may ship to you.

The site you pointed me to is now bookmarked because I'm sure I'll be shopping there at some point & they offer Worldwide shipping on their main e-bay shop.

Beeg, you're right - Shopsmith don't ship across the Pond but we do have their European distributor here in the UK with most of the parts that I need available from stock, including the speed dial at an acceptable price (inevitably quite a bit more than in the US) so I'll maybe give them a try.

Although the steel insert does have a certain appeal...

It looks like you got a pretty good collection to start with. If you haven't already read some of the "sticky"posts for new owners, and maint. information, please do. There is a wealth of information here. It can sometimes be overwhelming:rolleyes: If you cannot find the information you need, just ask. The folks here have been extremly helpful for me. Good luck with getting the Shopsmith cleaned up and running:)

Yeah, I thought it looked pretty good too - I planned a quick dust down & polish up and then on to making sawdust. Then I turned it on - while I wasn't expecting quiet I wasn't ready for the racket that it made! Hence the strip down.
Or was I just looking for an excuse to get it in pieces?
Anyway, I've replaced the top drive shaft bearings, cleaned everything up & now re-assembling.
