To restore or to replace?

This is my first post. I've been reading the forum for a month or more ever since I purchased an old mark V 500. It had been a project for an older gentleman. His solution to fix the original greenie headstock was to replace it with newer two bearing model. I got the old greenie headstock as well.

Here is my delima. The jig saw needs a new yoke and the jointer needs a guard and the saw guards I got from eBay need installed. The way and bench tubes need attention but are functional. The porkchops on both headstocks need attention but are working for now. Needless to say I jumped the gun on this one. I'm $800 in and its still not ready to make sawdust. Well today 510 in good shape came up for sale for $1000, C headstock, jointer, bandsaw, dust collector, and all of the smaller pieces.

Now I am torn. Should I jump ship on my gray/greenie and buy the 510, or keep piecing the greenie back together? If I get the 510 what should I do with the greenie, keep it for a minibench/sanding station, sell it as is, part it out, or finish the job and sell it as a refurbished unit?

That's easy, you get the 510. That's all there is to it. Then you re-build the other for re-sale, then have a change of heart ...'now that you have put so much of yourself into it', and that the wife (I am assuming the presence of SWMBO) sees that as the sensitive side of you coming out... and what a wonderful thing for your relationship. See, we have it all figured out.

I can recommend about any option except selling it as a restored unit. As nice as it is to own a restored one you will rarely come out ahead selling a complete unit. If you want money, part it out.

The SS is to be my 30th birthday present from my wife. So I guess the bonding over it has already begun and may continue in the future!

Aaaawww, I'm getting all teary:rolleyes: Seriously, I was going to say I envy you, but my better half is pretty understanding about my hobby/obsession. I might suggest keeping one of the units as a dedicated vertical solution, and cut down the way tubes. that way, you have the drill press/shaper/router option covered without having to change a thing!
