Power cord replacement question

Post by easterngray »

My daughters "new" goldie has a two prong cord that I need to replace with a grounded cord. Is there a limit to the length of the replacement cord? I would like to install one at least 12' long. Thanks - Alec

YES there is a length limit. But you well within it. The limit depends upon the amps you'll pull and the gauge of the wire. Since your replacing the cord, use 12/2 with a ground. Buy a 15 ft extension cord and cut off the female end.
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders, molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop.

If you do not plan on ever using an extension cord, you can safely use a 12ga wire cord on your SS for up to 50'. If you ever plan on using an extension cord, do not use one with less then 12ga wire and do not exceed much more then 50' total length (in other words, the 50' extension cord plus your short motor cord), between your SS motor and the wall receptacle. For more then 50' use an extension cord with 10ga wire up to 100'. I do not recommend using an extension cord longer then 100'; however, with the correct guage wire you could theoretically go much farther.
