Hi all..

I'm new to the Shopsmith world. I just picked up a Mark V. It's approximately 25 years old. It's in very good shape. Aside from the 5 standard functions, It came with a 6 in. Belt Sander, Band Saw, Jointer, Vac, ALL the standard accessories, plus the chuck and guard with some router bits, and the molder with some blades.

I spend pretty much all day yesterday going through the upkeep items. Removed the panels and blew out the sawdust. I blew out all the additional tools, cleaned everything with mineral spirits, oiled evrything that needed to be with 3 in 1 oil, waxed all the table surfaces, rails, all that stuff.

After I did that I tested each function one at a time to make sure they were all working properly. Everything seems to be working well, aside from one thing I can't figure out with the Jointer. I can't get the depth to set to make a cut deeper than 1/8 ogf an inch When I turn the knod it stops at 1/8 and will go no further. I can see that it looks like it as bottomed out.

I know that 1/8 of an inch is the max that should be removed at one time anyway, and I probably wouldn't even do that, but it says it goes to 3/8 of an inch, and just the fact that it won't bothers me. Is there something I don't know about that is governing this?

Hello jroberts,

The jointer has an infeed safety stop that prevents it from cutting deeper than 1/8". Just loosen this safety stop and you can move the depth of cut beyond this safety limit. Note this safety limit is there for a good reason.

Well ain't that foxey! I did not know that existed!;)

That must be on newer jointers, my old 55 doesn't have that.

My jointer from the late 80"s has it.

By newer, I mean relative to the age of mine LOL. Anything made after 1964 is considered newer in my shop. Anything after 1984 is new, and anything after 2000 is practically brand new!!

What can I say, I like using tools older than I am.

Thanks! I don't see that I would needs a reason to go deeper than the 1/8, if that deep. Just that it wouldn't go further when I know it should bothered me. You know.. Understand the tool before you use it thing..

Deeper rabbets are not unusual!;)
