Planer repair question

Has anyone replaced the old style height adjustment lever with the new style lever on their planer? My planer had the old round style, and it broke. I ordered a replacement lever, which is the new style, and i can't get it to fit. It looks like it should, in spite of the fact that the barrel that fits over the shaft is larger than the original and just fits through the hole in the shield. Any advice or help is appreciated. I called SS at 10 minutes before 5 but the phone lines were already closed down. Thanks Alec

If you don't mind the trouble I would loosen/remove the six screws that hold the cover. Then check to see if the crank works either with the cover loose or removed. If it does, it is probably an alignment thing that can be corrected by repositioning the cover or enlarging the hole that the crank passes through.

Thanks Rob - Actually, I tried that. It sure looks like it should fit, but even with the cover off I'm having a devil of a time. Just can't get it to seat. Alec

Had a chance to call Shopsmith today and was informed that since I have the older style handle on my planer I need a kit to retrofit the new handle - it's on its way. Glad to have the mystery solved! Alec
