Advatanges of Sanding Disc Table Insert?

Post by algale »

I noticed that Shopsmith has its sanding discs and accessories on sale. One of the sale items is the sanding disc table insert. The ad says it allows you to use your lower blade guard to collect dust when disc sanding. I already use my lower blade guard to collect dust when disc sanding and just bring the edge of the table close to the disc. So, to those who have this accessory, do you notice better dust collection or some other advantage when using the sanding disc table insert?

Having the table over the guard seems to improve dust collection. If I did not have one all ready, I would make one as I did for the conical disc. With the disc in the table, you can also use the fence (very helpful with the conical disc for sizing parts) which you may find of benefit.
