Shopsmith coming to Pensacola

Post by swampgator »

Got the email today to say they will be at the Lowe's on Airport Blvd. from June 28 thru June 30. Can hardly wait to see this. Don't know if my wallet can take any hits, but will see if I can upgrade my tables to 520. Hope to see some folks there. :D

Well, the man was there in Pensacola, but I showed up about 2 pm on Thursday. He was completing a demo. So, I asked when the next one was. He said, when enough folks stand around. I made the dumb assumption that he would start either on the hour or half past. So, had the grandchildren most of the weekend. After they left today, there was one hour left on the demos. Thought I would get there on time. Wrong. He was vacuuming and getting ready to dismantle for his trip home. Totally understandable. I said I wanted to see it in turning. He said he was just showing the motor of the new headstock. So, all in all, I got to see him make a very short Queen Ann leg, and he demonstrated a shaper undertable at 10,000 RPM. Worked great. That headstock is very quiet. It seems to me that the headstock still has two belts, which I really can't comprehend. I assumed that since the motor speed also controlled the quill speed, one belt to transfer the power from the motor to the quill would be sufficient. I thought the sheaves were gone. Wasn't permitted to see that either. The same pix was passed around.

Also, the new bandsaw does not have the knurl knobs to gain access into the unit. It now has allen screws. I think I much prefer the knobs. Think I'll keep my two bandsaws. That's all I have to say about it.

My band-saws were both built in the last decade and have the Allen screw fasteners. I can see why one would prefer the knobs but rather like the way the Allan screws are flat and out of the way. Each to his own. Come to think of it I have replaced a few allan screw fasteners with knows and found they didn't hold up well.

Shopsmith Belts

Post by billmayo »

The 2 belts were needed to operate both the idler shaft (joiner) and the quill shaft. When I was testing DC motors and controllers, I eliminated the idler shaft and drove the Poly-V Drive Sleeve pulley directly from the DC motor (8600 RPM)which used the same J type of belt pulley. I used much longer legs on the joiner so the drive sleeve shaft could operate the joiner. However with the power coupler vibration problem with the PowerPro, the flexing of the joiner being higher up would be too great. So I would believe that Shopsmith did test the idea of only using one belt.

Thank you, Mr. Bill. That makes perfect sense and is a point I did not even consider. Now I remember that it had the same shaft for the joiner. Great point. Thank you.

When I was given a 500 a few years back, I called and told them what I had and gave them my personal information for fliers and such. So, all you need to do is call the toll free number and let them know you own a unit. They may ask for the serial number, but I can't remember if I did or not. Anyway, I get emails of specials and sometimes things come in the mail. It'll cost you about 4 or 5 minuts talking to a real person instead of some automated machine. LOL Enjoy!
