Sheave spring nut and washer

My Mark five developed a loud screeching noise. I have found the issue or at least think I have. After getting the motor on the table. I removed the nut and spring and cleaned the shaft. Replacing the counter clockwise nut, the question came to mind, What holds the nut in place. I have read the forum enough to learn on some models there is a snap ring. Mine does not have a snap ring or a slot to put one in. What does hold the nut in place?
Learned alot just reading the maintenance section of the forum.

The nut was finger loose when I disassembled the unit.

The left hand threads prevents the normal loads from loosening the nut.
However the spring is what is trying to move the nut. It does not apply much torque to the nut.
The sheave is keyed, so it should not be torqueing the other end of the spring.
If the sheave was not sliding easily on the shaft, it probably was causing the belt to slip/squeal.
The floating sheave is what maintains belt tension.

That screeching can also be caused by letting the motor sheave snap back, which reduces the needed space to keep it from rubbing on the housing.

One final question, should I be able to compress the motor spring enough by hand to re-install the nut? I am just able to this by setting the motor on end and using the sheave plate to rotate the shaft?

NO!!! Use the board and a dowel rod to reinstall the the spring and nut. Here's a PDF that may help, starting at number 8 and the spring board description at the top of the page.
