Hi All just been looking at Mickyd execellent restoration instructions for the Gilmer, (here's the silly question) how do you tell the difference between a glimer drive without a clutch and one with a clutch.
Just taken my '57 greenie apart and it looks like the one in his post but his pics show the gear part in two halves containing some discs. Mine is either so stuck it wont split or isnt supposed too. Help please?

If this picture link does not work its the fourth image.
Thanks
Ian

First question is can you post a pic of yours? Does it look like Mickeys? Even mine of a 1954 vintage has a clutch and it has slipped recently so I know it works. I'm assuming yourss has a clutch but lets take a look...

Cant get photos till later but mine does look like Mickys the last photo link shows two Ali pieces at the bottom of the photo ( a gear and a collar with a grub screw) - mine will not separate or is there some special trick I'm missing to get them apart.

Thanks Ron it seems mine does have a clutch - now how to get it unstuck and back together as I haven't yet had a chance to use it. Only picked it up a couple of weeks ago in pretty reasonable shape but took everyones advice to 'strip her and oil up before using' - cant wait.

Remove the bearing, remove the circlip, loosen the grub screw.
The clutch is spring loaded so should separate on its own, if not there may be some corrosion on the shaft. In that case try a few drops of Evaporust or penetrating oil to loosen it.
How many discs?

All apart!! Thanks. All the discs were stuck together, managed to separate them
and cleaned up the metal ones, the fibre discs are black and quite compressed but hopefully still usable as I am informed nigh on impossible to get in the UK.
Last question for now how many discs should there be - I only have three metal and four fibre.

You can gently "clean"/scuff the fiber clutch plates with fine sand paper. Do a little bit, put it back together, check the tension, repeat as needed.

it appears that mine breaks loose at 12 foot pounds. Is that too loose?
I'm anxious to finish the resto of my 56, but don't want it to slip to easily.
Anyone know the proper spec for the slipping to begin? I'm using a beam torque wrench to measure it.

Mickyd said he was told "between 10 and 20 foot-lbs" by Bill Mayo.
