Well, I got my first zci finished today. My inlaw came over and we started him one for his 1979 model he just inherited. In pic 044 my inlaw is sanding his to shape. The material is lamanate flooring about a half inch thick and pretty wood on the top side. more pics to follow....
thanks, bill

Brick;
Nice job on the ZCI. I didn't think to use left over flooring pieces. We just had the house done in Brazilizn Rosewood and I have a bunch of pieces left over. You may want to think about making a wider slot behind the saw blade opening by using a 1/4 " router bit in a table to clear the riving knife and the upper blade guard. I had a piece of wood thrown back at me last year by not having the guard in place and it still hurts when I think about it.
Sorta like this one.

Really nice job. It looks as though that flooring fits perfectly.
The Upper Saw Guard mounts through this same kerf and I like to keep the kerf tight. For that reason, I extend the kerf using the saw blade. To do it quickly and easily, I build a sled. It is just a piece of wood with a runner and a cutout for the ZCI to set in.

Thanks bill V, I've got that on my "finish up" list as I ran out of time yesterday before we had to claen up for din-din.......
Hey dusty, great idea! I will probably try the router grove first as My riving knife/blade guard clamp seems to be right in line so the blade has to hug the lower guard......but I haven't finished looking at things just yet. just wanted to get the first one done and see what problems I ran into.......
one thing i forgot, I stopped by a couple of flooring stores when buying the box of leftovers. They had a nice selection and i picked the thickest ones......$10.00 for a whole box that will probably last numerous years!!
thanks for the reply guys!! bill

Great idea.....We're getting ready to do engineered (plywood) flooring in the living room. I'll save all my cut-offs! I've got a bunch of leftover laminate flooring, from our previous house, but the man-made color coat is so hard I don't want to even cut the slot in in ZCI with my good blades. The 'engineered' stuff should be not quite so tough.

Looks like you have mastered the ZCI!
I do have a question, how are you thinning the flooring to the needed thickness from 1/2" stock?
Looking forward to hearing more about the project.

Now that I am using the router, I have a whole new use for ZCI. MY old router table had interchangeable inserts for the different router bits the Shopsmith router insert does not have that. I am thinking of using a ZCI with the router/shaper.
