Shopsmith 510 on ebay Mount Joy, PA

I just come across this listing on eBay located in Mount Joy, PA. Looks like a great deal on a 510. Wish it was closer to N. AR. His Buy it Now pricing is very competitive.

A Model 510 with jointer and bandsaw. It is not a steal for that price but it is very reasonable and it does look good.

There's another 510 for sale in Mt. Vernon, Indiana. Also, has a 12" planer.

That price seems a little high, but perhaps it's a sign the economy is coming around. Craig's List is where I've usually had my best luck in buying used Shopsmiths as it seems not many people look there. As a result, people have no idea that there are good Shopsmiths in some cases. I got a brand new looking 520 with a new bandsaw for a lot less. Back in Feb I got a 510 with an Incra fence system, planer, joiner, biscuit joiner and a box or two full of other stuff for $125 more than this buy-it-now price. The seller lost trust in the Shop Smith and was determined to get rid of it in order to purchase a Saw Stop table saw.

I planned to upgrade that 510 to a 520, but then someone on the Forum here noted a 520 for sale in Maryland on Apr 5th, I believe. On April 29th, I sent an email and learned I was the first person to contact the seller on Craig's List. I was the owner of another 520 the following day.

On April 29th I also saw a 510 in poor to fair condition. The seller had not a clue of how to operate it. I was looking for a bandsaw which was also for sale. This seller wanted $800 firm & never even turned it on. He had a bandsaw SPT only- so he thought but I told him he had a DC3300 as he didn't know what it was.

I pulled the motor cover off and it was a mess. I'm not sure where this guy got the Shopsmith from. I think he was just moving in with a lady friend who perhaps had a husband or father who gave it to them. The way tubes & bench tubes, especially were rusted. I told the guy he really needed to look at the book on the bottom of the box and clean up the Shopsmith & maybe use it. But he told me he was a salesman and had no mechanical skills. I simply looked because he was so close.

If you don't do the maintenance for yourself, do it just in case you might kick the bucket & need to sell the Mark V and potential sellers might be interested.

He also has a Greenie a couple of listings down #130743010384 for $175 that also looks to be in good shape. If I still lived in Hanover Pa. I might go for the Greenie

I have been watching e-Bay for about a month just checking prices on Shopsmiths and related items. It seems that they go all over the board price wise.

I bought a Mk V 500 a few weeks ago off Craigslist. It come with band saw, jointer, belt sander, and several accessories. I paid $650 for it, but had to put a two bearing quill in it.

Over the weekend I found another Mk V 500 with band saw for $350. It is a few years newer with double bearing quill, but the bearings run hot and probably need replacing. If I had not driven 2 hours to look at it, I would have passed, but I figure I can salvage it and re-sell it, or part it out.

I don't know what fascinates me about Shopsmiths, but They do. I guess I like gadgets. I have several Leatherman and Gerber tools, which are gadgets.

My dad spent his life in wood manufacturing, and laughed at me when I purchased my first Shopsmith. But I still think they are cool as heck.

BTW, I was able to cut the slot in a set of replacement bed rails using the Shopsmith last week. I set up the tool in drill press mode and used a 4" diameter saw blade on an arbor. The double slotted clip that inserts in the rails fit perfectly. If I tried to cut the slot on a table saw I would have been injured.
